During this 4-week special course, you will learn not only how to write characters in multiple styles but also how to draw an abstract calligraphic drawing with sumi ink which is called Bokusho (墨象). Bokusho falls under the category of calligraphy, but it uses lines and shapes written with sumi ink to tell stories instead of characters. Each week you will be given a topic and create art with both calligraphy (characters) and Bokusho art.

Course contents include:

• Learn how to write Japanese and Chinese characters in multiple styles (block, semi-cursive, cursive and free style)

• Learn how to be expressive with lines, not with characters, and create Bokusho (墨象) art which is known as abstract calligraphic art

• Create sumi art with dots, lines, ink bleed and splash of sumi ink effectively

• Experiment with drawing lines with different types of brushes and tools

• Express emotions with brush and ink
