Kakizome (書き初め) translates to “first writing” and is a Japanese tradition where participants write their first calligraphy of the new year. This practice, often done on January 2nd or early in the new year, symbolizes setting positive intentions, hopes, or resolutions for the year ahead.

Traditionally, Kakizome involves writing auspicious words or phrases using brush, ink, and paper, with a focus on expressing one's heartfelt wishes and creativity. It’s a reflective and inspiring way to begin the year, combining mindfulness with the art of Japanese calligraphy.

During the workshop, we will go over the basics of Japanese calligraphy. We will also write new year’s resolution on a big rice paper as part of activity, so please think of the word you would like to write. Workshop contents include:

  • Japanese calligraphy history and tools

  • How to hold and control the brush

  • Basic brush technique

  • The possibilities of sumi ink

  • Express yourself with the brush and ink

  • How to write kanji characters

  • Write your new year resolution on a big long calligraphy paper

Everybody is welcome – no calligraphy experience or Japanese language skills are necessary. All supplies are included as rental, so no need to bring anything. Just bring yourself and curiosity!
