Japanese calligraphy begins with the magic of Sumi, a solid black ink stick that is ground with water to create ink. But have you ever wondered what goes into making this essential material?

In this special workshop, you’ll not only learn about the history and ingredients of sumi-ink but also have the rare opportunity to make your own ink stick!

We’ll connect live with a sumi-ink artisan from Nara, Japan, one of the few remaining regions where sumi-ink is still handcrafted. You’ll get an exclusive virtual tour of their studio and engage in a real-time Q&A session with the artisan.
